This week we’re highlighting quad port RJ45 connectors from one of our franchised distributors, KinnexA. KinnexA is a manufacturer of connectors for PC and networking industries that is headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan. They have manufacturing facilities in both Taiwan and in Dong Guang, China allowing them to engage in sales and distribution across the world. KinnexA specializes in the design and manufacturing of electronic components especially for RJ and other IT industry connectors like coaxial connectors and USBs.
KinnexA offers an array of RJ45s, including those with and without transformers and we’re going to be looking at two of their quad ports with built-in transformers. These quad port RJ45s have 1G and 10G transformers, allowing for 1Gb/s and 10Gb/s speeds and have been qualified with top PHY manufacturers. Both RJ45s can be mid-plane mounted, meaning they can sit on the PCB’s edge to allow both the space above and below the board to be utilized. KinnexA’s RJ45s are low profile with a height of 11.58mm. Considering RJ45’s may be the tallest part of the build, KinnexA’s connectors can give equipment designers a bit more space to work with. The low-profile aspect of KinnexA’s RJ45’s also makes them a great option for use in OCP NIC 3.0 Ethernet adapters.

RJ45 connectors are a type of connector, typically used to connect computers to a Local Area Network (LAN) and are one of the most used connectors for wired networks. Picture one of those blue Ethernet cables and that plug on either end is exactly what the RJ45 is. Registered Jack-45 or RJ45 for short, were originally used for telephone communications but have since evolved to be used for a wide range of data communication applications. They’re a type of 8 Position/8 Contact (8P8C) connector so they allow for 4 twisted wire pairs. What makes them unique from other 8P8C connectors is that they have a tab that only allows the connector to be inserted in one orientation to avoid improper wiring.
There are a few beneficial reasons to utilize RJ45 connectors in your designs. RJ45’s are low cost and widely available, making them more cost-effective than other connection options. They are also able to support higher data transfer rates to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for faster speeds with them now being able to support Gigabit Ethernet speeds of up to 1Gps.
These connectors are very versatile and are compatible with various Ethernet cables, even backwards compatibility with older standards. From being able to be used for large-scale telecommunications networks to your own at home computer, RJ45 connectors are compatible and adaptable to a variety of uses. Plus, they’re also very easy to install and maintain, which makes them even more beneficial and convenient. Since these connectors are standardized, they are compatible without the need for special tools and do not require any soldering to connect wiring.
RJ45 connector also offers the benefit of a constant and stable connection. Unlike wireless signals that can experience interference or completely lose signal, the wired connection with RJ45s offers a secure and reliable connection. This makes them especially useful in cases where data transmission cannot be interrupted.
RJ45 connectors are typically used to connect one network device to another. Any device that uses Ethernet protocol can be connected with RJ45s, such as PCs, gaming consoles, routers, modems, and servers. Since RJ45s create a hardwired connection, they allow for faster speeds and greater reliability. This makes this type of connector useful for both professional and personal use. As demand for faster speeds continues to grow, connectors have advanced to meet these demands, allowing them to be used for a multitude of new applications. Some of the newer applications for RJ45 connectors include factory automation, IoT devices, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) systems, quality control systems, and industrial robots.
