This approach led to a remarkable creation that has captivated the music technology community: the world’s smallest effects pedal.
Ethan’s extensive background at industry giants like Line 6 and Strymon, combined with Charles’s expertise as a touring musician and CTO, formed a solid foundation for Olinthus. Their shared passion for music and desire to inject
fun into musical equipment drove their explorations. As Ethan puts it, “We knew we wanted to create products that were a little bit unconventional, a little bit different – products that we knew other companies might not even consider.”
“We wanted our first product to be lighthearted and fun.” Ethan explained. “And as development continued, we started to realize how incredibly useful a small effects pedal can actually be. It opens up a new world of creative possibilities with the ways you can incorporate into your musical setup.”
Olinthus’s brilliance lies in both novelty and practicality, as they recreated the iconic sound of the Ibanez Tube Screamer in a captivating new form. This mix of familiarity and innovation resonated with musicians.

Navigating Manufacturing Challenges: The Turning Point with Suntsu
The journey from a groundbreaking concept to a tangible product presented numerous challenges, especially in manufacturing. Olinthus initially sought out components, like custom potentiometers, and Charles noted, “Originally, we had planned to work with Suntsu simply as a source for parts. Especially hard to find parts, like the low profile pot with an indicator that we wanted to use.”
He further reflected on their initial efforts: ”Our first in-house production run took significantly longer than anticipated, and we knew that was not going to be sustainable. We were trying to manage 22 vendors which was logistically challenging to say the least.”
Charles continued, “At the end of the day, we’re at our best when we focus our efforts on product design and not trying to overcome the many hurdles of product manufacturing. We quickly learned that we needed to find a manufacturing partner to streamline the process and maintain quality.”
As discussions progressed, Suntsu suggested a partnership, with Charles recalling, “We were very happy that you (Suntsu) could take care of all aspects of manufacturing. The convenience was certainly attractive, but it was also very important to us that the pedals would be built to our high standards.”

When asked for a word to describe their experience with Suntsu, Charles said “Yes,” reflecting reliability and success, while Ethan emphasized “Quality,” underlining the high standards maintained throughout the partnership.
