About VCXOs

Voltage-Controlled Crystal Oscillators (VCXOs) are specialized quartz crystal oscillators that offer precise frequency control through an applied voltage. Unlike standard crystal oscillators, which have a fixed frequency, VCXOs provide the flexibility to adjust the output frequency within a specified range. This makes them valuable components in applications that require adjustable frequency generation, particularly in communication systems.

VCXOs achieve their frequency control using a varactor diode, which is a voltage-variable capacitor. By changing the voltage applied to the varactor diode, the oscillator’s frequency can be tuned to a desired value. Furthermore, VCXOs are often used in conjunction with phase-locked loops (PLLs) to generate a stable output frequency. In a PLL, the VCXO’s frequency is compared to a reference frequency, and any difference is used to adjust the VCXO’s control voltage, ensuring a highly accurate and stable output frequency.
