Amtek Introduces 1.27mm BTB Connectors with Multiple Stacking Heights

Sunstu Electronics Is Now Offering an Ultra Small SMD Watch Crystal

PCB’s are used in most electronic applications and while there are many uses for single board solutions sometimes you just can’t fit all that power and functionality into just one PC board. When that happens and your design requires multiple PCB’s, board-to-board connectors are needed.

This week, we’re looking at Amtek’s BTB connectors which they offer in 1.27mm pitch for compact solutions. Amtek Technology Co. is one of the leading connector and cable assembly manufacturers based in Taiwan. They’ve been producing various connectors for over 25 years and are an ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and IATF16949 certificated manufacturer. Keep reading below for more about their BTB connectors plus a quick recap of what BTB connectors are plus their benefits and applications.

Amtek Technology Co. has developed new 1.27mm pitch, surface mount BTB connectors. These new connectors were developed by looking at significant brands to match their stacking height, including popular brands like Hirose, Samtec, Molex, and TE products. Three new male type and two new female type connectors were released with contact counts from 20 to 100 positions. The added male connectors are in three different insulator heights of 5.9mm, 9.5mm, and 14.8mm while the two female connectors come in insulator heights of 6.25mm and 9.7mm. All the above BTB connectors have 3 possible mating heights of 8.0mm, 13.2mm, and 18.5mm. Amtek can also accommodate custom stacking heights based on project volume for specific design requirements you may have. These new connectors are ideal for use in Industrial Controls, Medical Instruments, Motor Controls, and Programmable Logic Controller applications.

What are Board-to-Board Connectors?

Board-to-board connectors, also shortened to BTB connectors, are used to establish a connection between two or more printed circuit boards (PCBs). They also help you arrange circuits and components on your PCBs. This connection allows for power and other important signals to transfer between the boards without added wires and allows them to be stacked to save space when needed. They work to ensure connected PCBs can communicate with one another and allow the device to function seamlessly.

When choosing the specific type of BTB connector for your application, it will depend on various factors such as the space available, operating temperature, number of nodes and the desired performance. You’ll also need to consider the position of the two or more PCBs you’ll be connecting. If your PCB’s will be parallel, horizontal, or vertical there are straight, u-shaped, and right angle BTB connector solutions to fit your design requirements.

BTB Connector Benefits

Overall, BTB connectors act as a flexible and reliable solution for establishing connections between multiple PCBs when one just won’t cut it for your designs. They also offer some other benefits when used in a design.

Space Saving

Space Saving

Board-to-board connectors are significantly smaller than other interconnect options such as complex wires and wire harnesses in a design. This makes them ideal for smaller, compact applications where more than one PCB is absolutely required, allowing for more space for other critical components to overcome board space limitations.

Reduced EMI

Reduced EMI

Some BTB connectors offer shielding to help protect signals from electromagnetic interference (EMI) by keeping sensitive analog I/O and signal transferring connectors from high speed or noisy circuits. Since EMI can cause disruptions and malfunctions, preventing interference is essential to keeping the device working properly, especially in circumstances where there are potential EMI sources.

High Performance

High Performance

These connectors are a high-performance solution to connecting multiple boards. With a shorter path and controlled impendence, these connectors offer superior transmission with minimal loss. This makes them a great option for high-speed solutions where reliable data transmission is required.

Durability

Durability

BTB connectors are a durable option for board connectivity. They are able to withstand a range of environmental conditions, high mating cycles and other operational stress. This helps to ensure high performance and reliability in your design.

Design Flexibility

Design Flexibility

There are many options available to connect two or more PCBs and there are BTB connectors for each situation. Connectors have a variety of formats and specs that can be used to accommodate any design, including changes to things like their pitch or orientation. This offers greater flexibility to your design and allows you to utilize multiple PCB orientations to fit design and space requirements.

Applications & Uses

Board-to-board connectors can be used in a multitude of applications where two or more PCB’s must be connected. Their compact size, high performance, and durability make them essential components in various electronic devices. Some examples of these applications and uses are:

  • Mobile devices
  • Wearable electronics like smartwatches and fitness trackers
  • Robotics
  • Communication equipment
  • Medical devices such as portable X-ray and ultrasound machines
  • Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs)
  • Data servers and networking equipment
  • Consumer electronics like cameras, TVs, and gaming consoles
