About Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors offer the most capacitance for the cost of any common capacitor type, which makes them the standard choice for bulk energy storage and filtering in power circuits. An etched aluminum foil with a thin oxide layer and an electrolyte packs high capacitance into a compact can, at voltages from low-voltage logic rails to high-voltage power stages.
Because they are polarized and their electrolyte ages with heat, the ratings that matter most are capacitance, voltage, ripple current, temperature and rated lifetime. Selecting the right aluminum electrolytic capacitor comes down to four key specifications:
Capacitance and Voltage: Match the µF value to your filtering or hold-up needs, and choose a rated voltage with headroom above your circuit’s maximum voltage, including ripple peaks.
Ripple Current and ESR: Make sure the rated ripple current covers the AC current the capacitor will carry. Low-ESR series run cooler in switching power supplies.
Temperature and Lifetime: Lifetime roughly doubles for every 10°C below the rated temperature, so pick a temperature rating and hour rating that suit how hot and how long your product will run.
