Capacitors are very common in the electronic components industry, coming just second to resistors which are the most used in the industry. It is the physical ability of a conductor to store charge. Capacitance is found when a voltage source is connected to two plates and a current flows. One plate becomes positively charged while the other is negative. If the voltage source is removed, a capacitor will retain its charge. They consist of two conductors divided by a dielectric or a vacuum.

Capacitance is found by dividing the electrical charge magnitude by the potential difference between conductors. The SI unit of capacitance is farads (F). Named after the British physicist Michael Faraday, one farad represents a very large capacitance of isolated conductors. Due to its large quantity, smaller units were created and are more commonly used.
